Wash and fold etiquette: how to get your laundry ready

Good wash and fold etiquette comes down to five things: empty every pocket, leave out anything that can't be machine washed and tumble dried, mention stains, allergies and delicate items when you book, close the bag, and have it ready at the start of your pickup window. You don't need to sort or fold anything, and in Australia you don't need to tip.

Empty every pocket

This one matters most. A single tissue sheds lint over a whole load, a pen can leave ink on everything around it, and lip balm melts in the dryer. Check jeans, jackets, kids' shorts and the little pockets in activewear.

Cash, cards, keys and earbuds are safest taken out before the bag leaves the house.

Leave out what can't be washed

A wash and fold service machine washes and tumble dries everything in the bag. Take out anything whose care label says otherwise:

  • Items labelled Dry Clean Only
  • Silk, leather, fur, velvet and cashmere
  • Hand wash only items, and anything that has to be dried flat
  • Electric blankets, weighted blankets and pillows
  • Anything heavily soiled or that's a hygiene risk

Not sure about an item? Leave it out and ask, or add a note when you book. Our wash, dry & fold page lists what we take.

Tell us what we need to know

  • Stains: mention them in the booking notes, so we know what to look out for
  • Allergies or sensitive skin: ask for hypoallergenic detergent
  • Fabric softener: say whether you want it
  • Darks and whites: if you want them in separate loads, add the darks & whites split ($15)
  • Delicates: choose a cold wash and the delicates dry

The wash and dry settings apply to the whole order, so leave out anything that needs different care from the rest.

Packing the bag

  • Use a strong bag you can close. Your first Laundry Load order comes with a free Laundry Load bag to use from then on
  • Do up zips, hooks and velcro so they don't snag other clothes
  • Turn dark jeans and printed tops inside out
  • Shake out sand, grass and pet hair outside first
  • Don't overfill one bag: two bags are fine

Pickup and return

Have the bag at your door or with building reception at the start of your 2-hour pickup window. You don't need to be home. If you need to change the time, let us know as early as you can.

Check your washing within a day of getting it back. If something isn't right, tell us within 24 hours and we'll rewash it free.

Do you need to tip?

No. Tipping isn't expected for a laundry service in Australia, and the price you see is the full price. If you're happy with the job, a Google review helps a small local business more than a tip.
