How much laundry is 6, 10, 15 or 20kg?

A 6kg load is about one full home washing machine: roughly a week of clothes for one person. 10kg suits a couple's week, 15kg a family week or clothes plus sheets and towels, and 20kg a big household or a full reset with bedding. The weights below are dry weights and rough averages, so use them as a guide, not a scale.

What everyday items weigh

Most people underestimate towels and bedding and overestimate clothes. As a rough guide, dry:

  • T-shirt or singlet: about 0.2kg
  • Work shirt or blouse: about 0.2kg
  • Pair of jeans: about 0.7kg
  • Hoodie or jumper: about 0.6kg
  • Underwear or a pair of socks: about 0.05kg each
  • Bath towel: about 0.6kg
  • Queen sheet set (fitted, flat and two pillowcases): about 1.5kg

Thick cotton, denim and towels are the heavy ones. Activewear and summer clothes weigh very little, which is why a stuffed bag of gym gear often comes in lighter than people expect.

What fits in each Laundry Load size

  • Small, up to 6kg ($49): a week of clothes for one person. For example 7 T-shirts, 2 pairs of jeans, a hoodie, a week of underwear and socks, and a bath towel.
  • Medium, up to 10kg ($67): a week of clothes for two, or one person's clothes plus towels and a spare set of pillowcases.
  • Large, up to 15kg ($95, free pickup & delivery): a family week, or clothes for two plus a queen sheet set and four bath towels.
  • Extra Large, up to 20kg ($126, free pickup & delivery): a big household, or a full reset with bedding, towels and a fortnight of clothes.

Small and Medium loads have a $12.50 pickup & delivery fee. Above 20kg, every additional 5kg is $30. See all prices on our pricing page.

How to estimate your own load

The easiest check is your washing machine. Most home machines in Australia take 7 to 8kg, and a full drum of dry clothes is close to that. One full machine is a Small; one and a half is a Medium; two full machines is a Large.

No machine at home? Stand on the bathroom scale holding the bag, then without it. The difference is your load.

What if you pick the wrong size?

Don't worry about getting it exact. Pick the closest size when you book. We weigh every order at our laundromat and only charge for what's there.

If you're between two sizes and the bag has bedding or towels in it, go one up. They are heavier than they look.

Bedding and towels need room

Sheets and towels don't just weigh more, they also need space in the drum to wash and dry properly. A week that includes a sheet change usually moves you up a size.

Everything goes through our wash, dry & fold service: washed at the temperature you choose, dried on your setting, then folded, checked and packed.
