How to get the smell out of activewear

Activewear smells because sweat bacteria settle deep in synthetic fibres like polyester and elastane, and a normal cold wash doesn't always shift them. To get the smell out, soak the clothes for 30 minutes in cold water with a cup of white vinegar, wash them inside out on a cold or warm cycle with a sports or enzyme detergent, skip the fabric softener and let them dry completely. After that, wash them soon after every workout instead of leaving them in your gym bag.

Why gym clothes keep smelling

Most activewear is made from synthetic fibres that pull sweat away from your skin. The same fibres hold on to body oils, and the bacteria that feed on them cause the smell. Over time that build-up survives normal washes, which is why a top can smell fine when it's dry and stale again ten minutes into a workout.

Fabric softener makes it worse. It coats the fibres with a thin layer that traps oils and bacteria underneath, and stops the fabric wicking sweat properly.

How to fix clothes that already smell

  • Turn everything inside out: the smell sits on the side that touches your skin
  • Soak for 30 minutes in cold water with about a cup of white vinegar
  • Wash on a cold or warm cycle, not hot, which can damage elastane
  • Use a sports or enzyme detergent at the normal dose: more detergent leaves more residue
  • Leave out the fabric softener completely
  • If the smell is still there, repeat the soak and wash

How to stop it coming back

  • Don't leave sweaty clothes in your gym bag or a pile: hang them up to air until wash day
  • Wash them within a day of training if you can
  • Don't overload the machine, so water and detergent reach every piece
  • Dry them in the shade or on a low dryer setting: high heat breaks down stretch fibres
  • Put them away only when they're completely dry

Sports bras and leggings

Fasten the hooks and put sports bras in a mesh laundry bag so they don't snag other clothes. Leggings with mesh panels or prints last longer when they're washed cold and dried on low or flat.

If you'd rather hand it over

Activewear is light, so a week of gym gear rarely fills more than a Small load (up to 6kg, $49). When you book a wash, dry & fold pickup with Laundry Load, choose a cold wash and the delicates dry, and add a note if you want us to skip fabric softener. We wash it at our own laundromat and bring it back folded within 48 hours.
