If your apartment has a small washing machine, no dryer and nowhere good to hang a full load, you have four options: dry indoors on racks, buy a dryer, use a laundromat, or use a pickup service that washes, dries and folds it for you. Each works; the right one depends on how much washing you have and how much space and time you're willing to give it.
Why apartment laundry is harder
- Small machines: compact washers take less per cycle, so a week's washing means several loads.
- No dryer, or a slow one: compact dryers in laundry cupboards can be slow, especially with towels and jeans.
- Nowhere to hang it: balconies are small, and many buildings have by-laws about what can be hung where. Check your building's by-laws before you put a clothes horse outside.
- Drying inside adds moisture: a full load drying in a small apartment raises the humidity, which doesn't help with condensation or mould in winter.
Option 1: dry it inside
A good airer near an open window or with a dehumidifier running works for small loads. It's cheap, but it takes up floor space for a day or two, and towels and jeans take longest.
Option 2: buy a dryer
A heat-pump dryer is the most efficient type to run, but it costs more up front and needs space, and in many apartments the laundry cupboard is already full. Check the venting and space requirements before you buy.
Option 3: use a laundromat
Big commercial dryers do a week's washing in one go. The catch is carrying the bags there and back and waiting around. If you live near Wentworth Point, LaundDry is our own laundromat.
Option 4: a pickup service
